India is progressing, thanks to the Internet and the spread of information, today’s youth is rebelling against the Caste system and the patriarchal ideals of yesteryear. However, when moving forward the weakest often fall behind. That’s why, in the New Delhi slums of Trilokpuri, young women are still objectified and meant to stay in the household until married off.
When Illuminatii was founded, 13 years ago, women in the workplace was unheard of, where the exceptions were forced forfeit their pay to the head of the family. It took a lot of coercion to earn the trust of parents to allow their daughters to enter the workplace, and to get the girls to lie about their income so that they could save up a fraction for themselves.
Today, thanks to their newfound financial independence, the women have cell phones, go on excursions, socialize with men who aren’t family members, and are making sound financial investments! India still has a way to go, but freeing the girls from their economic sanctions imposed by outdated cultures and traditions seems to be a step in the right direction.
